Getting dressed is always looked forward to by girls of all ages. Especially when they are in their teens. Reason being, it’s the first time they get to bedeck among friends and mates who they have been studying with the past years. Then begin hours of non-stop thinking of “what looks best on me”. Although black is an all time favorite for evening wear among adults, teens prefer to get glittery with flush colors. Red, green, blue are common favorites and of course a dash of glitter. And why not every teenager wants to stand out from the crowd with a distinct dress and style. To their rescue come dress designers that make custom designs for teens. There are the affordable options and the no budget option, where designers give patterns, never seen before in colors and materials that will certainly make you stand out from the crowd. Some give you the add-on matching bag and shoes. While some even add matching accessories. So you get the complete look.

New styles emerge every year, and all lunge to dip into the latest. In fact trends stand so apart from each other that almost every decade there is a stark difference in what teenagers wore then to the parties and what they wear now. For instance in the 80s, the formal dresses were more frilly and layered. The balloon skirt teemed with an off-shoulder top was ethereal. Now it’s all about strings and straps, flush colors and glitter. The shorter the better and even tighter. Noticing the trends even brands have come up with signature attires for teens for all occasions.

Gone are the days of figuring out the right pattern, then buying material, searching for that right tailor and getting your dress in a week’s time. Now it is walk into a showroom of your choice, do a trial, a few tucks and the outfit is ready to go. But of course there are those who do it the traditional way, for the right pattern and fit. Weight, height, personality and age are some of the important factors that designers take into account when they design clothes for people. In fact Indian designers are known for the effort they take to make the right dress for a person. While vital statistics, as in measurements is an essential when stitching clothes; the designer also takes into account the wearer’s age.

Formal teen dresses differs from the garments worn by women of other age groups. Since the teenage years are synonymous with freedom, youth, achievement, energy, activity, etc., even the clothes designed for this age group symbolize these characteristics. No doubt the common formal color is black, but in the case of teenagers the preference is something vibrant. The fact remains that teenagers dress up more so to create an impact on others rather than being comfortable in what they wear. It is all about being up-to-date with latest trends. Formal dresses for teens are usually patterns with hemlines far above their knees, halter-tops and dresses. They also prefer fabric with more shimmer.

A teenager enjoys it most when she notices other’s glaring at her enviously as she walks down the hallway to meet her friends. When out shopping for teen formal dresses, girls also look out for accessories to match the dress. This could include jewelry, a purse and footwear. Some designers do make bags and footwear of the same material of the dress. For special occasions designers also help teenagers with the kind of make-up they should use, so that they stand out at the party.  ~ author Karishma Bajaj
