coin values

Many factors are responsible for arriving at the value of a coin. If a coin is unique, then there is a chance of getting a good price for it. It is important to remember that the rarity of a coin is in no way connected with the age of a coin. In addition to rarity, what is equally important in assessing the price is the condition of the coin. A coin in good condition will obviously fetch a better price. In fact when coins are graded, what is really being assessed is their condition.

If a coin is ancient, the coin value is determined not only from its historical value, but also from the value of the metal from which it is made. Consider a coin which belongs to one of the several dynasties that ruled India. The metals used were silver, copper, lead, and gold. A coin which is minted say in Rome will differ in value when compared with its Indian counterpart. So essentially speaking, the coin value would be determined by the base metal, and also the care exercised while minting the coin.

The laws of demand also dictate coin values to a certain extent. If a particular coin is very popular, then there would be many collectors collecting that coin rather than a coin which is rare. There are coin catalogues and coin newspapers which help in identifying retail selling price or retail values of the coin. Like demand, supply also has an effect on coin values. If a particular coin is available easily, then the coin value is not significant, but if there are only a few coins in circulation, then the coin values could also increase.

If a coin has been damaged, then the coin value decreases sharply. If the damage is extensive, then its worth will also correspondingly decrease. If however, there is a mistake or an error in the coin, its worth rises tremendously. Uncirculated coins have more value than circulated ones, because of the less  wear and tear it has undergone.
With the passage of time, the criteria determining the value of coins have also changed. As coins are primarily a form of monetary exchange, they need to be made from a substance which has some value,. They must have the seal of a competent authority and all coins need to be standardized.

If you a serious collector, then you need to be able to evaluate the value of the coins you have. A good coin catalogue which is constantly updated is a good thing to have. You will get a good idea of the values of the coins. Read coin magazines and keep up with the latest in the world of coin collecting. All said and done be true to your instincts. Coupled with the knowledge that you have about coin values, it could help a lot. However, do not be solely guided by gut feelings. You must learn to be practical and logical.
