Historians have not been able to give the exact date of origin of
stained glass artwork. However their first findings date back to the
medieval age. The medieval stained glass consisted of windows and glass
walls that had artwork depicting Christ and scenes from the Bible. These
were mainly found in the churches of France and Germany. The techniques of this form of artwork were initially described by the monk Theophilus in 1100 AD. The method he prescribed then has barely changed ever since. According to his description medieval stained glass was prepared by sketching out the desired pattern on a thick sheet of glass, add the colors as desired and etch pieces of glass to be placed on the paint with iron wire, enclosing each piece with lead and finally soldering it. Today many artists re-create the medieval stained glass patterns. These they prepare for windows, glass doors, etc. These patterns are basically a mosaic of colored glass depicting biblical tales. Apart from this theme, the craftsmen etched colorful scenes of nature on glass. Glass artists in India, bring out the medieval ages of the country. They re-create scenes from history that represents the centuries gone by. These stained glass patterns could be of a king attending to his court, the royal couple romancing each other in the vicinity of privacy, a palace, an old temple, etc. Some artists draw these pictures and transfer them onto glass, while others may trace original paintings and re-create it on glass. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
