raja ravi varma paintings

Raja Ravi Varma is one of the greatest painters of India. The unique part about his paintings was that they depicted Indian traditions with the techniques of European art. He was taken to Thiruvananthapuram where he learnt water color painting from the artist Rama Swamy Naidu. He experimented with new techniques and media in the field of painting during his formative years. He later spent a few years in Mysore, Baroda ad other parts of the country which enabled him to sharpen and expand his skills in art. He also learnt oil painting from the British artist Theodor Jenson and thus he evolved into a complete painter.

His exhibition at Vienna in 1873 for which he won an award got him widespread acclaim. Ravi Varma’s paintings were particularly noted for excellent portrayal of episodes from the story of Dushyanta and Shakuntala, and Nala and Damayanti, from the Mahabharata and even certain stories from the Ramayana. It was the mythological characters’ imaginative representation that Raja Ravi Varma was known for. His paintings were stylized and sentimental in nature. They evoked a certain sense of mystery and showcased a lot of drama.

Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings were dynamic and rich in form and content as he painted with one stroke that undermined the traditional Indian art. He combined the folk form of Indian art with western strokes that created a beautiful amalgamation that was never seen on the Indian landscape before.

Even though there are certain limitations in his paintings in terms of space and movement, his art influenced a lot of people and was often used in entertainment mediums such as cinema and television. It is said that Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings which were known for their ‘static realism’ were a great source of inspiration for Dadasaheb Phalke who was considered the father of Indian cinema. The expressions on the human faces of Raja Ravi Varma oil paintings are quite natural and delicately done. Raja Ravi Varma is a pioneer in the field of Indian art. His awe-inspiring paintings that depicted India’s ancient glory became quite popular and reached out to the masses through various communication mediums on a large scale.
