poetry contests

The purpose for poetry contests is to actually encourage people to delve into their inner depth and bring out the poet within them. The fact is that every human being is capable of being creative, bringing to the fore something innovative, but a vast majority of the human race shy away from their talents. They have inhibitions to bring to the fore their wonderful talents.

This is where poetry contests come in. In fact, most contests are held on a topical basis, wherein apart from coming across budding talents, on a wider angle the judges and others behind the contest actually comprehend peoples’ thoughts and feelings about the topic at hand.

For instance a poetry competition on pollution. Keeping this as the topic for the competition, the organization can devise means and methods in which they can spread awareness on the harms done by the pollution created by the mindless populace. There is so much that emerges from the varied participants, as through their contributions they share their views, or rather voice their views.

Sometimes poetry contests are held as a charity drive. In this case the participants are charged a minimum entrance fee for their poetic contributions, the winners are awarded well, and the forwards of the collections in the form of participating fees is used for some noble charity cause.

Some companies launching a new product hosts such contests so as to develop their brand presence as well as to be able to gain an innovative campaign slogan. So instead of being a poetry competition, it probably takes the form of a slogan-writing contest.

The prime reason behind children’s poetry contests is to give them a free will to express all that they feel. Actually, children do not even realize that they are bringing to the fore hidden issues when they express their thoughts and feelings through poetry or other creative forms. In some schools, the teachers are trained to interpret a child’s creative output in order to ensure healthy development.

The literary contests are not about winning. For that matter, it is not necessary that the participant who has won is the most talented of the lot; it is just that what he/she has expressed through the poetic lines is in keeping with theme. It is a subjective contest, and thus everyone who participates is considered a winner. And if you wish to take your talent forward then you should feel free to interact with the judges and ask them for guidance to further your poem writing talents. ~ author M. Hemdev
