wedding poetry

India is country where celebration happens with much aplomb. So be it birthdays, festivals, birth, weddings, etc., the kind of celebration involved drives people to go beyond their means. This is because they believe that a happy occasion is God’s blessing and gift to them, and no matter how they show their happiness to God, it is too less. Thus, celebration from the Indian perspective is a means of showing gratitude to God.

One of the biggest landmarks in a human being’s life is his/her wedding. In fact, according to the Indian scriptures marrying is that essential stage of life that teaches man and woman alike the importance of taking responsibility of their life and that of the children they bring into life.

In times gone by boys and girls were married of very early and with keep magnanimity as the essence. A part of the wedding celebration was various functions. One of the functions involved family members and close friends to gather and bless the bride and groom with their creative thoughts. People would recite poems, as well as sing songs.

Wedding poems are not just written by the bride and groom for each other, but also by other people related to the couple. Through the poems they express the importance and value of the institution called marriage, as well as bless the couple.

Some of the age old wedding poems have been put to tunes that have not been digitally recorded, but are performed as part of the festivities with relatives and friends playing the various Indian musical instruments and others performing and singing in chorus.

In fact writing and reading out wedding poems is one of the prime ingredients in catholic weddings, where people close to the bride and groom read out their poetic thoughts as part of the ceremony. This includes their closest friends, siblings, and of course parents. Sometimes the bride and groom also poetically pen their feelings for each other and read it out just before exchanging their vows.

In this genre of poetry are also included poems written for the various occasions such as when proposing marriage, the engagement, the wedding shower, when exchanging vows, during the wedding supper and just when leaving for the honeymoon. It is just a way of celebrating togetherness.

And just in case you are no too creatively inclined then probably you could adopt something from what has been written by the established poets who have been published in print. ~ author M. Hemdev
