Drapes serve the purpose of giving your home a
comfortable look, upgrading home décor and insulating your home. Yes,
drapes even act as shields against heat loss, keeping your home warm on
the inside. Insulated drapes, as they are known play a dual role. Firstly as drapes they bring quaintness and attitude to your home. And at the same time they keep your home warm not allowing the cool chill air to enter the room. How do insulated drapes work? When the cool air enters the window it is obstructed by the insulated curtains and fall to the floor. The warm air enters from above, cools down and falls to the floor. This allows even mixing of air in the room as the cool air is obstructed. Thus causing less heat loss. In the absence of the curtains, the heat loss would be increased as the cool air would swiftly move in. However the amount of heat loss depends on the types of drapes and their thickness and the gap existing between the drapes and the window wall. The difference of temperatures – inside and outside also attribute to the insulating effect. However these protective drapes can cause a little inconvenience too. As they trap the cool air, condensation occurs. The wall near the window sill or both (the wall and the window sill) get moist. Sometimes there is excess moisture accumulated that concludes to rotting of wood and deterioration of the wall. Hence if such drapes are to be installed make sure you have water resistant wood and paint which is available in plenty in India.
