Since time immemorial, the oval shape has been a preference for mirrors.
In fact the oval mirror of times gone by are still hung in the
palaces of India, and across the globe. Why the oval shape? It
is something worth thinking about! One possibility is that oval is the
shape that has always been identified with when it comes the human face.
In fact, when one is learning how the make portraits, at the very base
one has to draw an oval and then modify it in accordance to actual face
and its features. In Indian palaces, one can see ornamental oval mirrors in what could be regarded as the queen’s personal quarters. In fact most movies depicting historic tales show the women sitting and admiring themselves, or grooming themselves in front of such mirrors. This shaped mirror permits the craftsman to explore his artistic talents. Mirror frames of this shape seem far more a result of free flowing imaginative juices than the usual squares and rectangles. In India, one of the finest designs we come across is the wrought iron oval mirror that is carved with leaves, stems and flowers that stretched out across the wall. Indian mirrors of this shape are usually fit into brass, bronze, silver, copper or wooden frames. They are mainly engraved, embossed or adorned with gemstones. These are available in all sizes, which maybe one for the dressing table, or a full length. You can also order for a custom made one. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
