Music is a universal language. It is popular all across the world sans any bias or prejudices. In India, music has always been popular among the masses. Classical music ruled the roost during earlier eras but since last one century, film songs have acquired the cult status. Hindi films songs are most widely heard form of music in India but apart from that, songs in many regional languages also have massive fan following. One of the popular regional language film songs are Malayalam film songs. Belonging to the state of Kerala, Malayalam is the official state language here. Kerala is famous for its tourist attraction but music of this place also holds a commanding presence. In fact, Malayalam songs have played a crucial part in enhancing the cultural diversity of this region.

Almost all genres of music are played in Kerala. From film songs, devotional songs, to pop, classical and folk songs are equally popular in this state. Malayalam film songs are beautiful depiction of rhythm and melody. Like Malayalam films, Malayalam film songs also took some time before taking off. During the initial period, they were more influenced by Hindi and Tamil music. Malayalam film songs officially took off after the release of movie ‘Kamala’ in 1948. Films songs became an instant hit among the people of Kerala. The film music got further boost with the arrival of singers like A.M.Raja, K.P Udayabhanu and Kanukara Purushothamam.

These singers simply swept away the Malayalam film songs world by the sheer magic of their voice and versatility. Combining with talented lyricists and composers of that era, these singers despite not being of Malay origin helped in popularising Malayalam film songs.

However, if one has to take the name of one person who single-headedly changed the entire musical landscape of Malayalam film songs, then it must be K.J.Yesudas. He took Malayalam film industry by storm and till the date, he has kept his date with destiny. He has won several awards in his glittering career. Along with other talented singers like Janaki, P. Leela and P. Susheela, he literally metamorphosed Malayalam music industry.

Among the current crop of musicians, name like Rahul Raj, Deepak Dev, Alphonse, Jassie Gift, Biji Pal, Madhu Balakrishnan, Afsal, Manjari and Jyotsna etc are making Malayalam film songs proud. Recent releases including Neelathamara, Bhagyadevatha, Laptop, Innathe Chintha Vishayam, Calcutta News and Minnaminnikkoottam etc have given some blockbuster songs. .
