Marathi movies

  Maharashtra is the birth place of Indian cinema. Marathi cinema has a proud history and many Marathi personalities contributed significantly in the evolution and development of Hindi Film industry. The first Indian movie was Raja Harishchandra and it was made by a Marathi person famously known as Dada Saheb Phalke. He is the grandfather of Indian cinema who made phenomenon of moving images possible on Indian screens.

The most prestigious award in Hindi film industry is also known as Dada Saheb Phalke award and that’s a deserving recognition of the incomparable contributions made by this person. Apart from him, several other renowned personalities have made significant contribution in development of Hindi cinema as well as Marathi cinema. Names like V.Shantaram, Bhalji Pendharkar, Master Vinayak, Raja Paranjpe, Acharya Atre, Sudhir Phadke etc are immortal in the annals of Marathi cinema.

Taking the baton from above mentioned stalwarts were names like Dada Kondke, Anant Mane, Raj Dutt and Datta etc. People were thoroughly entertained by Marathi comedies, dramas and tamasha style movies made by these giants. During 1980s, celebrities like Ashok Saraf and Laxmikant Berde made a mark for themselves in Marathi as well as Hindi film industry. We also need to remind ourselves about names like Sachin and Amol Palekar who have kept enthralling movie-buffs with their brand of cinema. In fact, new generation of Marathi actors and directors are doing significant work in reviving the glorious days of Marathi movies.

Mahesh Kothare is a famous name in Marathi cinema. He is credited to introduce not only Dolby Digital sound system in Marathi movies but also several new technological revolutions. In the recent times, Marathi movie, Shwaas made history. It won Golden Lotus National award in 2004 and was a huge critical as well as commercial success. The current crops of famous Marathi actors are Nana Patekar, Sonali Kulkarni, Ashwini Bhave, Atul Kulkarni, Sunil Barve, Sachin Khedekar, Sanjay Narvekar etc. Some of the Marathi directors are trying their best to make Marathi cinemas more popular across the country. Slowly, some Marathi movies are also being screened in multiplexes.
