But apart from Bollywood movies, that has a wider reach across India and world; many regional cinemas have also flourished over the course of the time. These regional movies have fanatic followers and they provide huge employment opportunities to people. The existence of regional cinema is not a new event. They have been in existence since the time, use of technology was not even prominent. If you look at the old regional cinema, you can’t help but get fascinated by the sheer mastery of images. The theme and structure adopted by regional cinema was as per the international trends and that says a lot about how progressive the old movies were.

Talking about Tamil cinema, it is one of the biggest movie industries in India. The journey of Tamil cinema also began with silent movies. First Tamil movie was released in 1916 and during the initial periods, majority of the movies were based on mythological themes. Some of the old Tamil movies were Eratha Tilagam, Maniyosai and Pana Thottam etc. Slowly, songs started to become integral part of Tamil movies. Films were made on socio-political themes that conveyed messages. During the earlier era, some of the famous Tamil stars were Shivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, M G Ramchandran and Saroja devi etc. The works done by them is still alive in the minds of cine-going public.
