Popular Hindi music has its roots in cinema. Unlike the west, even today, the best and most popular Hindi music comes from films, rather than pop albums. Since the day that our movies became ‘talkies’, song and dance has been a much-loved ritual of our cinema. The old Hindi songs are usually based on Ragas, or were drawn from folk music. Ghulam Haider is known as the father of the modern Hindi film song, as we recognize it. Initially, basic instruments like tabla, sitar and dholak were used by composers.Now, there is a mash of everything, much of it dependent on synthesizers. Along with changing tastes, Hindi music has continued to adapt itself to include elements of rap, techno, trance and hip-hop. Ghazals are another popular form of song, uniquely developed in India. since their traditional patronage is dying out, there is a resurgence of
interest in the classical forms, with the new popularity of ‘world
music’. Indian music’s exponents working abroad have made a visible mark
on the surface of western music as well. There is a huge collection of
Hindi songs available on the internet for downloading, nowadays. Some of
them charge a small fee to register to download their songs or
