table linens

While cotton is the most preferred fabric for table linens, today a lot of synthetic fabrics are also available. These could be plastic coated or glazed, making it easier to wipe out stains. Amongst the traditional table coverings was those made of lace. Ladies would sit for hours together darning their laced tablecloths. There was also the crochet ones, popularly known as grandma’s table linen.

People generally use table linen to avoid any damage done to the furniture because of greasy food stains; or the table polish wearing off because of liquid spills. While this is the main reason, aesthetically too, the house looks prettier with colorful linen covering the various tables.

Amongst the popular prints are the one with checks for the kitchen table. Many people would purchase the kitchen tablecloth, napkins, apron and oven gloves as a set. The most preferred colored checks would be in the combinations of blue and white, green and white or red and white.

Table linens for the drawing room would usually be floral ones for the dining table. And small table cop covers would be placed below showpieces on the coffee tables and shelves. People usually purchase cheaper linen for day-today use and the more expensive lace ones for the guests and other social gatherings at home.  ~ author Karishma Bajaj
