Tips for effective Teaching - A persuasive essay by M Swami.

The difference between an instructor and a teacher is distinct. Teaching goes beyond the contours of instruction, for while the latter merely imparts information, the former succeeds in instructing in the best way possible. The parameters that define teaching are inherent in the concept of the act itself.

Countless methods of teaching have evolved over the centuries vying with each other to gain supremacy. The goal of effective teaching is characterized and determined not by the coordinates but by its center, its origin---the students. A teacher is someone who through patient toil and intelligent instruction accepts students as they are with all their strengths and weaknesses thereby preparing them to face the challenges of life. By acknowledging the fact that no two students are equipped with the same mental acumen, the teacher paves the way for motivated study, keen competition, healthy rivalry and a zest for learning. These are the only tools that any student needs to possess in order to succeed.

Teaching is an art not included in the fine arts. It demands commitment, dedication, total and absolute involvement. Without these props to buttress it, it becomes an insignificant exercise, which involves going through the motions robotically--- A sure way to stifle and kill even an enduring interest. Teaching should seek to break barriers without appearing to do so establishing in the process rapport of the highest degree.  It should earn respect and in turn learn to confer the same. The dividing line between the teacher and the taught is delicate and thin---a couple of wrong moves could upset the apple cart. Remember, the teacher is a mentor, a guide and a friend all rolled in one. Visual aids, new audio and video techniques may have revolutionized the world of education, but the role of the teacher and the goals of teaching remain unchanged.

Inherent in the concept of Effective Teaching is the need for a constant self-appraisal, introspection and self-improvement. There are no guidelines laid, no yardstick but your own, no laws or rules except the ones you make. Hence it needs to sow seeds capable of infinite growth, it needs to have infinite patience to weather the storms and tornadoes and above all it needs to nurture, tend, and nourish lovingly the saplings placed in its care.
