Liquid Crystal Display Televisions, better known as LCD televisions extensively offer slim profiles. Basically, the LCD technology has advanced rapidly in the last decade. Initially it was only used in laptop computers. Technical achievement in this area has resulted in brighter displays, higher resolutions, reduced response times and cheaper manufacturing processes. It has also permitted manufacturers to increase the screen size.

LCD televisions work by trapping a liquid crystal solution between two panes of polarized glass. These crystals are manipulated through an applied electric voltage so that light is allowed to pass or is blocked, according to the requirement. The LCD monitor displays the images according to where and what wavelength of light is allowed to pass. A backlight provides the monitor brightness. These monitors in general have a lifespan of approximately 60,000 to 80,000 hours. This leads to an average of 20 to 25 years of daily 8-hour viewing.

Flat panel TV displays like LCDs and Plasmas are significantly bright and feature high contrasts. This implies that an LCD TV can perform well under varied light conditions. A brightly lit room will wash out the picture; and a tube light will not cause a glare on the television screen.

One question usually asked by regular television viewers is at what distance should the TV be kept. In the case of the 20 to 27 inch TV monitors ideally you should be seated between 2.5 and 5 feet away. You should generally sit 6 to 8 feet away from your 32 to 37 inch LCD televisions. And in case f the 50-inch screen the distance maintained should be 12 to 14 feet.  ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
