nursery
decor can be exciting to create

Decorating a room and that too a nursery can be an exciting task. The main
aim is to ensure safety and comfort of the baby but once that is achieved,
decorating can be as wild as your thoughts. In fact, since the baby neither
knows or cares where it is sleeping, the décor is more for the parents than
for the baby. Fabric and color can mix as widely and wildly as you want them
to but beware of giving in to the temptation of using bunnies or butterflies
as a decorating theme. Once the baby grows up, there is the inevitable
redecoration. So play it safe with the colors and the themes.
The first and most important thing to do before decorating the nursery is to
get the feel of the room at different times of the day and see if it is
indeed suitable for a nursery. Just imagine, going through the entire
wallpapering and painting only to find that the room you’ve chosen is too
draughty or too sunny to be used as a nursery. So get the basics right and
then attend to the décor. It does make a lot of sense to choose your
furniture first. Have a bassinet or a cradle, a crib, changing table,
closets for storage and a rocking chair or a glider. Buy matching pieces,
but wherever possible do resort to double duty furniture. It will save a lot
of unnecessary expense when you redecorate for an older child. Paint the
walls a solid color instead of wallpapering it. That way it need not be
redone at a later time. Use removable and easy to clean rugs that match with
the furniture and the walls. Framed pictures of ducks and teddies,
enchanting images of moon and the stars and nostalgic prints can be hung or
framed anywhere. The baby will surely find these entrancing as it grows up.
These can easily replaced at a later stage. Window curtains that end at the
windowsill are better than the floor length curtains because the baby will
pull at them when it learns to crawl. Looped cords however nice they may
look are taboo.
A diaper genie pail is a useful thing to have around to dispose of diapers.
The twist away disposal system ensures an odor and germ free room. It is
easy to use, hygienic and can be made to match with the décor. Popup clothes
hampers decorated with pictures of bears and rabbits made from mesh and
fabric can be used to store the frequently used clothes. When not in use
they can be folded away. Stack and store drawers with dividers can store the
loads and loads of clothes that children seem to use.
Night lights with automatic sensors which turn on and off by themselves are
a must. With the right kind of lampshade the soft soothing light is easy on
the eyes. Mobiles over the crib and changing table attract the child’s
attention and keep it from crying. These come in different designs and
shapes and some of them give 15 minutes of continuous classical music. This
would be a good way to find out whether your child has a good ear for music.
Coat racks, wall shelves, an alarm clock, wooden bookends with sitting or
standing bears are useful accessories to have even when baby grows up. Soft
blankets, and cuddly mattresses augur for comfort and sound sleep not only
for the baby but also for its parents. Nursery organizers should be an
essential part of any nursery. Featuring handy pockets, it allows you to
keep those one hundred odd things that you would expect to find in a nursery
close at hand. Hang it from the crib or the changing table and the days in
the nursery are less of a hassle.
Have fun decorating the nursery but be sensible and practical at the same
time. It can save a lot of bother later on.
