Tips on buying nursery furniture for your child ~ By Mini Swami

Once the walls of the nursery have been painted or papered and the rugs are in place, the emphasis should be on the nursery furniture. The first thing that comes to mind when you conjure a nursery is the furniture that is an inevitable part of any room. Baby cribs come with many features. Casters are sometimes included to ensure smooth moving from place to place. There are rocking cribs and there are cribs that can change into a youth bed or a day bed. This comes complete with the necessary kit and each transformation is complete by itself. Cot beds could also be a good option once the baby is slightly older.

At least for the first few months when the baby is very small, Moses baskets or cradles are very convenient. The baby can be carried from place to place and from room to room and looking after it becomes easier. Bassinets do the same job, but they are not portable like the Moses basket. They are however very useful once the baby has outgrown the Moses basket. Immaterial of what is being used, sheets, blankets and mattresses are a must. When buying the mattress do ensure that there is no space around the edges when fitted into the crib or cot. Hammocks can be used till the baby is 12 months old as they reproduce the gently rhythmic movement that induces sleep. The baby hammock comes with the frame, spring, sling, mattress and a compact handy bag. The changing tables usually made from wood and non-toxic paints are perhaps the most useful piece of furniture. They usually come with straps that help to keep the baby from falling to the floor. The tables have a provision for suspending mobiles above the baby’s head to keep it engrossed while changing its clothes or diapers.

Rockers and bouncing chairs could come in handy when the baby refuses to quieter down. The vibrating action they produce soothes the baby. Since they  comes with an adjustable back, a harness and a toy bar, the child really enjoys its stint in the chairs. The fabric is durable and does not stain easily and can be detached for washing. Some of the rockers do have the swivel facility that is fantastic.

No piece of furniture in the nursery is redundant. The dressers with either 3 drawers or 6 drawers prove to be very handy. They can hold all the blankets and sheets and are deep enough to house bulky items like pillows. They come in different colors and can blend into any setting.

The lingerie chest with its motifs and unisex colors comes with wardrobes equipped with hanging rails and shelves that can be adjusted. The drawers slide in and out very smoothly and can be used to store the bibs, layettes, the diapers and the umpteen things that a baby seems to need. As the baby grows up, toy chests become a necessity and chests or pieces of furniture that could be doubled as storage chests will be in great demand.

High chairs, backpacks and carriers, diaper pails and car seats are accessories that will have to be provided. Night stands and lamps, swings and carriers can always be added. In fact, the furniture can get as imaginative as you want. Remember the golden rule— try not to be tempted into buying just about everything that you see. The baby grows out of these things so fast that your are left saddled with a lot of unnecessary furniture. If you do not have storage space for the redundant items, you will have to resort to giving it away. Plan and be sensible while selecting the furniture.
