Brass contains 55% to 90% copper and 10% to 45% zinc. The
proportion varies according to the use of brass. This metal can be
beaten into various shapes and rolled into sheets or made into fine
wires. Primarily this metal is used in manufacturing hardware, wiring,
bathroom fixtures, musical instruments, currency coins of some
countries, etc. Because of its sturdiness this metal is even used for
beds. Brass beds were more so used in the days gone by. In the homes of the previous centuries one can see magnificent beds with a brass frame. In India, the brass bed usually had four brass pillars for the net covering to protect people from insects and other flying creature of the night, while they slept. Those who could afford it, would have exquisitely designed beds with engraves or gemstones embossed on them. Since brass can be carved into various shapes and sizes, some brass beds have heads that are finely carved. Some of these designs include fairies, flowers, a historic scene, etc. The more intrinsic the work the more expensive the bed. The Indian brass bed is usually crafted into ethnic patterns that resemble Indian tradition. One must be careful when purchasing bedcovers and pillow covers for this type of bed. The best upholstery would either be earthy tones or ethnic designs printed on them. One can also opt for the light colored embroidered bedcovers. What you must avoid are bright colors and those with modern art patterns printed or embroidered. You should always keep in mind that the bed sheet and pillow covers you pick up can add majesty to your bed, or could mar its beauty. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
