The metal bronze is an alloy of copper with other metals.
However, most of the bronze sculptures created around the world are a
copper alloy with zinc and tin. This metal was first used during a
particular era known as the Bronze Age. It was during this time that all
tools and weapons were crafted from bronze and thus, the name evolved.
In fact, according to Historians, bronze was found as early as the
fourth century BC. Bronze being stronger than iron, it was not only used for tools and weapons, but also decorative artifacts. Doors, furniture, statues, engraved tablets, were crafted out of the metal. One of the most popular handicrafts has been the Bronze horse sculpture. Since the horse is a significant creature in almost every culture, one can find this sculpture almost anywhere in the world. In the Indian context, the horse’s significance lay in its value as a transport vehicle. Most kings practiced a ritual called Ashvameda. According to this ritual one of the finest white horses was sent to travel freely into any kingdom. If it was barred entry or the king of a particular region attempted to capture it then war was declared on that kingdom. Or, alternatively, wherever the royal horse lay foot, that kingdom was declared the horse owners’ legacy. Since the horse was of such importance it was immortalized in the form of a bronze sculpture. Carving bronze horse sculptures is an art by itself. Some of finest sculptures have details that make it look like the miniature of a real horse. A lot of pains are taken when creating the various features of this fine animal. In fact amongst all bronze horses sculpted world over, one can make out the differences in the breeds and physical features, and tell which country it belongs to. That is if one is actually into studying horses. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
