Copper is primarily mined from the raw ore of
chalcopyrite, which is basically a sulfide of copper and iron. This is
also known as copper pyrite. The other ores from where copper is derived
include chalcocite, bornite, cuprite, azurite and chrysocolla. Another
prime source of copper is secondary copper. This is produced from
discarded copper and copper alloys. Copper is used for various purposes
due to its physical and chemical properties. Copper has an atomic number
of 29, its atomic weight is 63.546. It can sustain in the solid form
reaching a melting point of 1,085°C. its boiling point is 2,562°C and
specific gravity is 8.96. Because of these facts and figures it is used to manufacture cooking utensils, electrical wiring, gutters etc. It is a highly ductile and malleable metal. Since it has its own protective coating making it corrosion-resistant it is used in plumbing. Copper gutters are one of the major uses of this metal. It is used for water piping. This is because the metal has no properties that could ever poison the water. The reason for this is the process that the metal goes through before being put to use. Copper is put through a purification process known as electrolysis. Thin sheets of pure copper are used as cathodes and a solution of copper sulfate with sulfuric acid is used as the electrolyte. Through this process soluble impurities such as nickel and arsenic get dissolved in the electrolyte. Also insoluble impurities, that include silver, gold, and other precious metals, settle out of the electrolyte. These may be collected and purified in a separate process. The water piping that is placed in copper gutters are made from the pure copper, ensuring purity of water. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
