Investing in precious metals
|
|
We commonly hear people talking about
investing in property, shares, stocks, mutual funds and gold. These are
all considered prime assets as they have a payback value, securing the
investors money and paying more over a period of time. Yes, the markets
may crash for some unforeseen reasons, but this is a negative event for
speculators. As far as investors are concerned they can hold onto their
assets till they need to unless an emergency comes up and they need
instant cash.
Today, more and more people are investing in precious metals. In fact people feel safest making such investments as they feel it is the best hedge against inflation. Another fact that attracts them is that they can convert their precious metal reserve to cash almost instantly, which is not the case with property. Even in the case of stocks there is probability that just when the investor needs to sell it, the price has crashed. And in the case of Mutual Funds and Insurance Schemes, he can convert them to cash only as per the company rules and regulations. Investment in Precious Metals calls for certain precautions to ensure that the investor is not make the wrong moves. Firstly, as an investor must opt for precious metals investments in the form of either bullion, precious metals mutual funds, stocks and shares of mining companies or metals and gold futures. Amongst these the safest is purchasing and storing gold bars or coins. Most Portfolio Managers suggest that not all of the investor’s money should be invested in precious metals. Their investment should be divided amongst the various investment instruments. In India, there is a clear distinction between rural and urban investment patterns. In the rural, agricultural regions of the country people invest their income into gold and silver. They consider this a good investment especially if they have daughter’s and as a protective measure to secure them against any financial crisis. In urban cities, people prefer to handover their money to Investment Managers or Portfolio Managers who suggest how they should distribute their income, which includes precious metals investments. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
