stainless steel pipe

Stainless steel is used for varied daily applications at home, in the industries, hospitals, for food processing, while farming, for aerospace, to mention a few. At the very base stainless steel is not a single alloy but a series of variable compositions. Each is designed to serve a particular purpose. While there are over 150 stainless steel grades, on an average only 15 are commonly used.

The stainless steel pipe is not made from a particular type or grade of stainless steel. Its alloy depends on its use. Pipes maybe used to transport water in cities and so maybe laid underground. It maybe used for the domestic drainage system. Pipes are also used in industries for various purposes.

Stainless steel pipes maybe made from austenitic stainless steels, which contain a maximum of 0.15% carbon, a minimum of 16% chromium and nickel to retain the austenitic structure at all temperatures; be it from the freezing point to the melting point of the alloy. This type of stainless steel may also contain traces of manganese.

The ferritic stainless steel pipe is highly corrosion resistant. However it is less durable than the austenitic grade. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment. This alloy consists of anything between 10.5% and 27% chromium and traces of nickel.

The pipe made from matenistic stainless steel is not as corrosion resistant the austenitic and ferritic stainless steel grades. However, it is very strong and tough. It is usually used in industries as it is highly machineable. It can be hardened by heat treatment. This grade of stainless steel contains 11.5% to 18% chromium and an essential amount of carbon.
