What are designer fabrics and why are they most sought after? Well, it works like this. Just like you would not pick any shoe off the road and wear only what looks good on your feet, similarly fabrics that are picked up by dress designers and used for niche items are called designer fabrics.

For instance if there is a dress to be made with a flowing look, one cannot use taffeta or plaids, it has to be sheers or silks. So it is up to the designer to choose the right fabric that gives the right cut making the user feel perfect under that flowing dress. If the look is great, the dress and the fabric is called designer.

Dress designers have an eye for the right fabric and when they pick it up and use it consequently, the buyer calls it, designer fabric. Twills, plaids, satins are always in fashion. But not just any of them. For instance there are over a 100 qualities in silk, so which one is designer. It all depends on what designers use for a grand outcome.


Designer fabrics are also a common term among wholesalers, who try to push a particular fabric, making it a fast selling item. There are some dress designers who love to work with a particular fabric. For instance, notice a fashion show of a reputed name. You will find different dresses, cuts and seams. But there will be one fabric flowing right through the entourage. Making it a designer fabric.

Skilled designers, however try their hand at many fabrics and so every season, they dabble with a new fabric, pushing sales subsequently of that fabric. Retailers and wholesalers then get the edge to sell off a particular fabric. Also some fabrics are patented as designer as they have created a brand. Designer fabric are usually a bit more expensive than the rest. Basically, this category of fabrics is designed by individuals to create expensive clothes and even upholstery for homes. The term comes from the fact that certain designers create exclusive patterns for special occasions.

Since, this is a more expensive variety of fabric, people purchase them for special occasions. Many brides purchase designer fabrics for their wedding outfit as well as for the more expensive clothes that go into the trousseau. During festivals or other celebrations, people tend to make clothes out of expensive fabrics that are available. Fabrics that have designer signatures are not easily available in the local cloth market. Nor are the originals sold in the wholesale market.  Most Indian fabrics carrying designer labels are exported to fashion houses around the world.
