vintage fabric

The term vintage means something old, archaic, historic, traditional, classic, antiquated, etc. Basically anything that belongs to an era gone by has more value than contemporary objects. This is also the case of vintage fabric. In the case of this category of fabric it was the pure cloth, unlike the large variety of synthetic ones available today.

Vintage fabrics are usually used to make costumes of times gone by. This is ideal for fancy dress parties where the theme maybe something to do with the historic times. Even those attending proms purchase clothes made of vintage fabric so that it looks authentic.

Though it is not too common to find this sort of fabric, you could look around at the larger fabric stores or with textile companies. Fabric termed as vintage in India are those that were used by the royal families of time gone by. The fabric had rich embroidery or beadwork done on it. Commonly pure cotton, silk and raw silk are amongst the older material in India, which are far more expensive then the newer lot.

A lot of reputed fashion designers prefer to work with vintage fabric, since it adds beauty to the clothes they design. Even interior designers who decorate homes with antique furniture prefer this material for the upholstery. Even though it may connote something old, in other terms antique, it does have a universal contemporary feel amongst those who can afford it.
