  One who collects coins is known as a numismatologist or a numismatist. Such a person may have a collection of coins, which date back to centuries ago, belonging to various countries of the world. Collectible coins are not just those that belong to the prehistoric and historic times, but even coins of today that belong to countries across the globe.

More often than never, people pick up such hobbies from where their grandparents or parents left it. So to speak hobbies like coin and stamp collection begins as an inheritance, progressing from there. The older and more diverse the collectible coins, the more precious it is. There are people who have earned a lot of money from the coin collection that they have inherited.

Whether you are collecting coins as a hobby or as a means to earn money, it is important to be aware of the various coin categories. There are the regular issue coins that are minted under government authorization; basically these are currency like the Indian Paisa. The commemorative coins are minted only for a particular event or to honor a legendary person or organization. These are minted mainly to be sold to collectors. The proof coins are produced with a shiny, frosted or mirror-like finish. These are minted to be sold to collectors at a premium price. There are the bullion coins, which are minted in precious metals such as gold, silver or platinum. These are mainly used as gifts or a means to invest in these metals. A lot of bullion investors prefer the precious metals in this form. These coins also have beautiful engravings. In India, during the Diwali festival, people exchange Silver coins as a symbol of good luck. Finally, the most cherished are the coins belonging to ancient civilizations.

Building up on your piggy bank of collectible coins is not very difficult. You could start with amassing contemporary coins that you find interesting especially while traveling abroad. You could purchase coins from shops that deal in this. Certain places have flea markets, where there would be a couple of stalls selling coins. If you can afford it then the ancient ones are usually auctioned.
