The origins of Assamese Movies can be traced way back to the dreams, aspirations and the fruitful imagination of Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala. He was not only a revolutionary visionary, but also a multi-faceted personality who was a distinguished poet, a playwright, a composer and probably the most important role of his personal life – a freedom fighter.

He played a key instrumental role behind the production of the first Assamese Movie Joymati. And in this movie Mr. Jyotiprasad also took up the additional multiple roles of being the scriptwriter, producer, director, choreographer, editor, set and costume designer, lyricist and music director due to the lack of availability of trained technicians. This Assamese Movie was literally a one-man show completely manned by Mr. Jyotiprasad.

The war marked a turning point in the Assamese Movie Industry. The most memorable Assamese Movie of the fifties was undoubtedly Piyali Phukan. This Assamese Movie won the prestigious National award. By the middle of the sixties production of Assamese Movies became a more regular affair.

An interesting tid-bit to add here is that for the stretch of 35 years between 1935 and 1970 only about 62 Assamese Movies were made. And, on the contrary, in a mere stretch of 12 years, between the period of 1970 and 1982, a total of 57 Assamese films were made.

And it is no surprise that today the Assamese Movies are slowly emerging and moving out of the shadows of Hindi Movies.
