The origin of the Greek Movies can be traced back to the year 1914. “Golfo” was by far the first full-length Greek Movie, which was directed by the director Costas Bachatoris. The movie Golfo depicted a rustic story about love. This movie also used the backdrop of goats grazing on the mountains to depict this rustic story.

Since this first breakthrough of the first Greek Movie, it took a full twenty years before more Greek Movies were made to break new grounds in the history of Greek filmmaking.

Another interesting and yet surprising piece of tidbit about the Greek filmmaking is that in the film “Daphnis and Chloe” which was a Greek Movie made in 1931 and directed by Orestes Laskos, the very first nude in the history of European Cinema was featured.

Majority of the themes of the Greek Movies remained concerned with agriculture and related bucolic topics in the initial few years of filmmaking. It was a gradual process when the themes slowly evolved and graduated to themes revolving around Second War and then later also moved on to other more cosmopolitan settings.

The Greek Movie industry experienced its golden era in the fifties and early sixties. In this period over sixty films were produced on an average every year. It was in this very period of the Greek Movie Industry that films became such a central part in the life of most Greeks.

The Greek Movie Industry went through a sudden decline in the next couple of decades after the golden era. It has been since this time of the mid-1970s that the Greek Movie industry has suffered considerably due to the widespread impact of television. The commercial success of the Hollywood and other International Movies also has a strong impact on the Greek Movie Industry.
