 The history of the Iranian Movie production can be traced back to the early 1930s. At this point of time there were only a few silent comedies. These were a pivotal element in adding a domestic flavor to the list of Iranian Movies that were otherwise predominantly consisting of a set of featured foreign films. This had been a consistent trend for thirty years before the silent comedies made a foray into Iranian Movies.

The very first Iranian talkie was The Lor Girl that was released in 1934. This was one among the very first of the several Iranian Movies that were made. It was a long decade of inactivity that the Iranian movie production began in Iran in the year of 1949. The Second World War caused this decade of inactivity.

The post World War period saw a spate of low-quality melodramas and comedies being produced in the Iranian Movie Industry. This laid a foundation for a purely commercial cinema that henceforth continued to dominate the theatres of Iran for the next three decades to follow.

Just before the Revolution in 1979 Revolution, there was quiet emergence of a New Iranian Wave. This Iranian Wave was a result of the work of a group of artists and intellectuals. This radical group actively denounced the existing movies which they claimed were of an escapist nature. This group also launched an active movement that was responsible for producing a whole set of indigenous Iranian Movies. These movies were reputed to be of a very high quality of cinema and had a deep element of social consciousness.

Despite the fact that the Iranian Movie Industry faces strict restrictions the Iranian Movies have been consistently shining in international arenas over the last decade.
