The Irish Movies have occupied a fraught position in the Irish society. The Irish Movies have also been attacked time and again by the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church blames the Irish Movie industry for a detrimental influence on the pious and the faithful Irish people.

Irish Movies have been regarded by the Leftists merely as a tool for propagating capitalism. Similarly the Republican movement views the Irish Movies as a weapon for spreading imperialism. These very viewpoints have been instrumental, in providing an explosive battleground, for the competing discourses within the State during the early parts of the twentieth century.

But at the very same time for the emigrants from Ireland, who had been relocated in other parts of the world especially in Britain and America, the Irish Movies were a great source of articulation. These emigrants responded to the Irish Movies and related them to their own experiences of departure and arrival.

The international successes of Irish films have been many for the filmmakers and actors and yet there have only been two authoritative and extensive volumes relating about Irish cinema. These books do contain some excellent material on the Irish Movies but they just don’t encompass recent developments
