Japanese Movies and its history can be traced back to the first premiere showing of Edison's Kinetoscope in 1886. In the following year, the movie directed by Lumiere brothers, which is a film production company from France was introduced to the Japanese public.

In fact in addition to this, in 1898, two more cinematographers from the Lumiere Brothers Company happened to visit Japan. They took shots on a variety of locations. In the course of this tour a Japanese photographer had also accompanied the group.

The very first Japanese Movie was shot in 1897. It was in 1898 that two more Japanese movies were shot and produced. The story of one of the movies was based on the dramatization of a robber's famous arrest. The other famous movie was a comedy.

This comedy Japanese Movie was based on a story about a person who happens to play a prank on a man who is soundly asleep on a park bench. Both these movies had the same cinematographer and actor.

These Japanese Movies gained high popularity in the country. The immediate result of this was an increase in the number of theatregoers in Japan. It was around the period between 1908 and 1909 that mass production of Japanese movies started.
