Serbia is a country situated in the Balkan region and its war-torn past has affected its cultural diversity to some extent. Yet, native folk Serbian music, also known as “Narodna Muzika” is the most popular form of music in native Serbia. Folk Serbian music uses both traditional tunes and modern musical compositions. The above mentioned folk music is the most modernized form of music in Serbia.

Another popular folk genre is ‘Montenegro Novokomponovana’. Themes generally used are love related and accompanying instruments are accordion and clarinet. Kolo, a two beat dance folk form of music is also quite popular and considered as very pure.

Traditional ethnic Serbian music uses diverse range of instruments including types of bagpipes, trumpets, lutes, flutes, cymbals, horns psalteries and drums. Other sub-instruments include; Gajda/Zurle, Kaval, Tapan/Davul, Zurna, Diple, Tambura/Tamburitza, Gusle and Šargija/Bouzouki/Saz.

Famous Serbian singers are; Saban Bajramovic, Boban Markovic Orkestar, dZihan & KamienBoris Kovac. Boban Markovic Orkestaris is considered as a legend in the history of Serbian music. He was a master in the genre of Balkan Brass Bands and Roma (Gypsy) Music. Termed as Serbia’s first musical ambassador, he redefined his country’s music and gave it international recognition. Also a trumpeter, he is equally proficient in jazz.
