Gospel music is basically a genre of music that is primarily a form of American religious music. So to speak this music is linked to evangelism. It is established blending of folk melodies with spiritual undertones and jazz tunes. The gospel music lyrics can be found at evangelist churches across the USA, as well as other such churches in the world.

Primarily gospel music is said to originate from the time when slaves from West Africa were converted to Christianity, as they were brought upon the American shores. The lyrics mainly came into being when the slaves sang of their woes and their undying faith in God while working on the plantations for long hours. It was their own way of instilling faith in each other that they would be rescued some day.

The lyrics of the gospel songs expose the emotions and jubilance that the enslaved Afro-Americans experienced. When these songs were sung in the churches there was the main lead singer who would sing each line, and it would be repeated by all the attendants. Apart from instilling strength and courage amongst those collected in the church, it called for people to obey God’s ways and follow His righteous path. It was a way of telling them to follow the good path, in spite of all the suffering meted out to them. While singing the songs during sermons the people would experience gushes of enthusiasm, vigor, and spiritual motivation and inspiration.

If one listens to the jazz tunes and lyrics of the songs of the 1950s and the 1960s they will be able to experience strong undercurrents of gospel elements. Usually, one seeks to know who actually brought about the first of gospel music lyrics. Well, this achievement has been credited to Thomas A.
