Rap music is now a rage all over the world. What began as tunes and lyrics of the west has today progressed into almost every country creating its own local rap artists. And so there is a place for almost any one with an inclination towards rapping to find a place in the rap music charts.

All you need to do is pen words together, and recite them to the music in the background. But then you need to remember that raping is a genre of singing, but yet is not really similar to actual tuneful singing.

So, then what is rapping? As defined, rapping is considered to be one of the types of hip-hop music. What is hip-hop music? Basically, hip-hop music is a type music wherein the lyrics are put together in a rhyming rhythm and spoken while musical instruments are played in the background. Rapping follows the same pattern.

Initially rapping was also popularly known as Mcing, and it usually was an accompaniment with DJing. As such rapping originated as a deviation from the so-called ‘toasting’ that is prevalent in reggae, funky music and dub tunes. This form of music blended with certain undercurrents derived from the jazz-related performance poetry, and the radio jockey’s chatter. According to the rap artists, their form of music also has antecedents the music created by Bob Dylan.

And who were amongst the first to reach the rap music charts? So to speak, The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron, are said to be the first ever rappers with their compositions and performances dating as far back as the late 1960s and early 1970s.

After their initial steps, the masters of ceremonies began to improvise on rap form when rendering their presentation in poetic form against music, accompanying the DJs.   However, the first record to have popularly opened the doors to rap music was when in 1979 the Fatback Band, featuring rapper King Tim III presented ‘King Tim III’. Then came Sugarhill Gang’s rendition of “Rapper's Delight”. Ever since, a large number of artists have entered the world of rap music, some of them finding top slots on the rap music charts
