famous poets

From the beginning of India’s documented history, archaeologists and historians have written vastly about the poetic culture of India. In fact every religious scripture that has been written on Indian soil has been done so in the poetic form. This includes the descriptive and prescriptive ‘Vedas’ and ‘Upanishads’. However, the authorship of these works has not been authorized to nay single writers. It is said that it was written by the saints under the guidance of the Gods.

Amongst the most famous ancient poets are the two who wrote the longest epics to exist in world – The ‘Ramayana’ and the ‘Mahabharata’. The former is said to be written by Rishi Valmiki and the latter by Rishi Ved Vyasa. It is believed that both these famous poets had written their works under the inspiration of the holy.

The wealth of Indian literary work lies in the innumerable poems written by the poets through the ages. In fact almost every poet of the past belonged to the saintly lineage. So to speak, they were saints who wrote precious lines of rhyme and rhythm in their own regional language. So rich has been their contributions that writers from across the globe have attempted to translate the poems and present them to their populace.

Apart from the saint-cum-poets, there were the royal poets of the quotes who penned verses praising their kingship and the kingdom as a means to entertain the royal entourage. In fact the kings would have poets gathering in specially organized festivals, thus honoring the famous poems of the day.

One of the most popular poets was Indian poet Saint Kabir who wrote what is known as Sufi poetry. Sufism is basically a sect that does not believe in any religious doctrine or the existence of any God, but believe in worshipping humanity. They believe that God resides in every human being.

While the poets of ancient and medieval India wrote poems in honor of God and prescribed the ways of life, the poets who belong to the recent past began to write about contemporary issues. Like the poets who wrote during the drive to India’s independence from British rule expressed their views on the struggle and romanticized the moment when the country would be freed.

And today’s poets write on any issue that is topical. The poets take up burning issues and express their thoughts and concerns in every possible medium. They gather at universal summits and recite their verses. The fact is that today’s poets have a far larger reading populace and can gain all the fame in their lifespan, which was limitation in the case of the poets of times gone by. ~ author M. Hemdev
