 For many writing a poem is probably the most difficult task, but actually it is really not as daunting as many people consider it to be. Penning poetry is all about penning one’s feelings about anything that they feel passionate about. It could be an object, person, issue – just about anything.

Many scholars have written rules and regulations on how to write a poem, but the fact is that there can never be any set premise within which one can write a poem. In fact, a poet will always admit that it is nothing but a flow of thoughts. And this flow of thoughts is automatically rendered into verse.

People tend to think it to be difficult, because almost everyone reading poetry think it is about rhyming; but that is not the case. Yes, some poets have made a conscious effort to create rhyming lines in their poems, but then there is the form of poetry known as free verse wherein rhyming rules are put aside, and well meaning words are spun together.

Most beginners tend to take lots of effort into writing a poem, however it is an effortless creative process. In fact writing poetry is not a career or profession, but a passion. If you read about the various poems you will find out that none of them maintained a hard and fast rule on when and how to write poetry – they just believed that they heard the words that they penned.

Being a poet implies being in tune with the innermost self. It calls for the ability to dive within the innermost confines of one’s existence, listening to the soul. This is the basic premise of how to write a poem.

In fact, when you read the best of poetry ever created, you will notice how the poet through his words and lines takes you through a virtual journey. Thus, it is a natural art and craft that comes in a flash, and yet may not occur for a long, long time.

Yes, you can always study the various forms of poetry to fit yourself into a genre if that is what you want. However, every poet known has based his poetic style on one of the forms, and yet created something exclusive that makes all poetry readers identify with him or her.

One of the most important things to remember is that your poem should have a tune to it, even if it is not set to music. This is what makes it a unique branch of literature – its song-like renderings.

However, if what you really want is the initial guidance on how to write a poem, then here are a few guidelines:
-Understand the basic terminologies involved in poetry writing such as rhyme, meter, etc., so that you are in keeping with basic premises of poetry writing
-Creativity is spontaneity and not planning. This implies that as soon as you have thought put it down in the exact words instead of planning to do so later. It is said by many that creativity is lost in contemplation and thoughts do flow in poetic form
-Pick a topic tat you are passionate about
-Do not attempt to imitate other poets, but try instead to develop your own style
-Most important is let the poet within you emerge without any inhibitions.
