poetry publishers

Most poets who have been published began as what is known as ‘closet poets’, who were made public by someone or the other who took interest in their work. In fact a majority of the ancients poets were published long after their death – in technical parlance they were published posthumously.

There are poetry publishers who have published the poetic works that have been penned in the diaries of some famous people. These diaries long after they were gone, maybe stumbled upon by relatives or friends. There are other publishers who spend a lot of money into finding archaic works of poetry, print them with an interpretation. Poetry publishers also specialize in translating popular poets from a across the world, who write in their own native language.

However, unless one is already established as a writer, a publisher would rarely take the risk of publishing an entire poetry book by them. This is because, poetry is not something read as popularly as is the fictional and non-fictional books. And investing into a little known writer would be a risk. So, usually publishers purchase the poems and include them in the mixed anthologies.

But then, if you do have something unique to offer, or what you say is something meant for the reading populace, then there are publishers who would readily take the risk. It is all about how convinced they are on the viability of your works.

In fact the hottest selling collection of poetry are those written by someone under tragic circumstances. For instance, someone who has gone through the most trying of circumstances, including near-death experience, and has written poems in which he/she has expressed the trials and tribulations, feelings, thoughts, emotions, hopes, aspirations, achievements, would be published almost instantly. This is because the publishers feel that selling poetic works that can inspire from real life poetic depictions have the largest market. A risk worth taking!

In spite of all this one need get intimidated, and must continue writing poetry and finding every possible avenue to be published and read. Because what you right from the heart could touch so many more, actually making a positive impact on their lives.

However, the good news is that there are numerous small time poetry publishers in India, who actually specialize in publishing religious books, or then poetry works created in the regional vernacular language. These publishers prefer publishing works in the local language, as they are confident of achieving sales targets. However, if you are ready to have your work translated then the publishers would be more than eager to have you published.

There is no hard and fast rule as to the publishing contract one enters to, as every publisher has its own ways of functioning. The publisher may choose to pay a lump sum, or royalties on sales, or then would expect the poet to also share costs and profits. The fact is that before becoming a famed poet it is struggle to have the first few books published. And once you make a mark then publishers would come knocking on your doors at your terms and conditions. ~ author M. Hemdev
