So you are ready to have a baby. You are in a positive frame of mind. You take every precaution to ensure the best. But pregnancy is a very critical state. A minor mistake can lead to a miscarriage. The father’s responsibility for a miscarriage is not known. However researchers have shown that when the body is exposed to mercury, lead, industrial chemicals and pesticides it can damage the sperm.

The first signs of miscarriage: Blood Spots – although blood spots are a part of pregnancy. Do not take it lightly. Call your doctor and give him the details. During this period you can wear sanitary napkins but no tampons.

Abdominal pain, cramps can be a part of it. To be on the safer side always call your doctor. What does your doctor do?

Your practitioner will first take an ultrasound. If your situation does not improve then there will be a second round of ultrasound scan. If an embryo with a heartbeat is visible the chances of a miscarriage are low. However if there is an erupted ovum or an empty sac it indicates you have miscarried. But if the sac is not yet visible then you will have to take an ultrasound scan again indicating you are less than 7 weeks. If it’s only your second trimester and your cervix is opening a procedure called cerclage is performed. Where your cervix is stitched to prevent a miscarriage or premature delivery. But the risk factor is always exists. The best prescription is however bed rest and forgoing sex is also advisable till the bleeding and cramping stops.

What if you have lost the pregnancy, but your tissue hasn’t yet passed.

You have two options: First you may choose to let the miscarriage happen on its own. Many women on knowing miscarry immediately within a week. But this can be very trying, as it is physically painful. Also nausea, vomiting and diarrhea occur. But as it is critical to wait for a miscarriage you may need a D&C. This is your second option: D&C stands for dilation and curettage. (Curettage is a process using the vacuum aspiration to extract the tissue. It is also called suction curettage.) Moreover if this is your second or third miscarriage consecutively the doctor may need to test the tissue if they find a genetic cause. Your risk of miscarriage also increases with each child you bear and if you get pregnant within three months after giving birth.

Whatever option you choose for a miscarriage, you will still have mild-menstrual, light cramps and light bleeding for up to a week or two. Using sanitary pads is advisable, avoid sex, swimming and vaginal medications. Take complete rest till your bleeding stops in totality.

However if your bleeding continues and you fill a pad in an hour or there is fever and other sicknesses admit yourself immediately.
