Sperm donors

For over a few decades now, sperm donors have been brightening the lives of childless couples. However, over the years the rules regarding the identity of these donors have been undergoing a few changes. Sperm donors are reluctant to come upfront. They prefer anonymity and wish to retain their right to it. A survey conducted by BBC revealed that sperm donors would stop donating if the rules were changed. In 1985, a law was introduced which allowed children of donor insemination the right to identify their biological father. Doctors are divided over this issue. They feel it is the child’s right to know details about their father. HFEA spokesperson, Ann Furedi believes it is in the larger interest of the children particularly in regards to the growing importance of genetics in medicine. In countries where donors can be identified, this legislation has led to couples choosing to be fertility tourists.
