Being a heavy and durable fabric, canvas has been put to
many uses. In fact it is universally known as a multi-purpose fabric.
Apart from canvas clothing it has been used as a base for painters;
campers and nomads have used it since time immemorial; shoes made from
this material is recommended for schools, as a fashion accessory as well
as recommended for those with back and leg problems and are constantly
on the move. Apart from all this it is used for covering boats when not
out at sea. Canvas boat covers are tough and can withstand any kind of climatic challenges. Usually while boats are docked at shore during the monsoon season, they go through wear and tear in spite of not being at sea. This is more so because the interiors would be damaged if not protected. This would include rusting of the metallic accessories and the wooden or other seat covers. The canvas boat cover is made with a waterproof inner lining. They have holes on the edges so that they are placed in a secure fashion on the boat. So to speak the ropes that are used to tie the boat to the dockyard is pulled through the holes on the cover. In the rainy season while driving through the coastal areas of India, one could spot boats docked on the shore and covered with canvas covers. It is a cost-effective means of protecting the boat and also does not need to be changed for years together as it has a relatively longer life span than the covers made from synthetic material. Canvas boat covers are preferred over the other since it is strong and tough. The winds of the rainy season cannot blow it away as easily and so the boat would be more protected than in the case of other covers. Those made from synthetic material are usually so light that the slightest of breeze could raise it, allowing the rain to seep through. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
