Shower Curtains add decor to the bathroom and that extra bit of color that makes taking a shower worthwhile. They are an inexpensive option that lighten your mood and put a spring in your step. Like other things however, they have to be cared for. Since they are near water, wetness is a factor that we have to deal with.  They need to be constantly dried and cleaned so that they remain durable. Let us look at some of the things that we can do to keep them looking new.

Fabric curtains need to be handled with kid gloves. They must be subject to delicate washes regularly and remember do not squeeze the water out. DRIP DRY them.  While drying them ensure that they are stretched well. This prevents mildew from building up. Every spot should be thoroughly dry otherwise the curtains could be in danger of making an exit from the bathroom.

The curtains once washed look bright and colorful as they were when purchased and the temptation to use a hot iron is great. This is absolutely taboo. The heat can destroy the waterproof coating and if the shower curtain is made of plastic, it will be reduced to nothing in seconds. It will simply melt even as you look at it. Use a cool iron and they will look as good as new.  So if the curtains are made of vinyl or plastic, just rub it dry once a week and spray it to prevent the build of mildew.

So the secret is to keep them absolutely dry and rub off any dirt or mildew that collects or better still ensure that no mildew collects.  Expose the curtains to light and natural air so that they are thoroughly dry. Dry dust has a way of getting entangled in the folds; so if the curtain is a fabric one, ensure that that the dust is not allowed to collect. Another way to prevent mildew is to soak the shower curtains in a solution of common salt. If mildew stains prove to be recalcitrant, take the juice of lemon and rub over affected spots. Dry the curtains and mildew does a disappearing act. Use fabric softeners to keep the curtains new and good-looking. When you do buy these shower curtains buy in a pair, so that if one gets damaged, you are not left high and dry.
