U is for umbrella, a child is taught. So from a child to
an adult everyone is aware of what an umbrella is. Its uses and its
purpose are well known. In the monsoons it protects the person from the
pattering rain, while in the summer it keeps the harsh ultra violet rays
away from the delicate skin. But are the umbrellas used in different seasons the same. Well, you could use them. But materials differ with respect to the season. For instance for the rains, the material used has to be waterproof and wind resistant. On the other hand a summer umbrella need not be water-resistant. Hence canvas is used widely for this purpose. As the sole focus of these umbrellas are to keep the sun rays away a thicker material is used. Umbrellas are a handy item in every household. Hence it has given birth to small-scale industries that manufacture umbrellas in India. The umbrella basically consists of two parts. The canopy and the rod. The canopy is the material stretching over your head while the rod has hoops and joints and the main handle attached to it. These industries provide for all the necessary parts to put together an umbrella. Moreover men and women carry different kinds of umbrellas. Pure black is said to be the man’s prerogative as he thinks the colourful ones are too girlish. Floral, geometric to a variety of designs and colours are seen in the women’s section. These days’ women have grown particular about the colour they carry and they believe it is also a style statement. Long grandfather umbrellas that look like walking sticks are in style for a few years now. Mostly ladies are seen carrying them around. It is said to complete the ensemble on a rainy day.
