telemarketing jobs

Telemarketing has been around for a long time, but in the recent years it has been creating a large buzz around itself. India especially has suddenly become a hub for these jobs. Apart from the local products, the large amount of outsourcing that has been happening for international products is amazing. Telemarketers can work in a variety of settings. Mostly their jobs involve calling up people and either spreading awareness of the product or to try and clinch a deal over the phone.

The jobs follow a very patterned and structured format. This structure might vary for each company. Telemarketing jobs require the executive to make outgoing calls using a 'script' prepared by the management and aimed at:

  • Selling goods (eg timeshare property) or services (eg double glazing, pension plans)
  • Finding out what kinds of things people buy, to research consumer trends.

The telemarketers have a strict schedule to follow and the telemarketers have to make a certain number of calls within a fixed period of time. This requires the marketers to keep the calls as short as possible. And each telemarketing executive is expected to enter details about each call meticulously.

Working Hours and Work Environment:

The normal working hours for a Full Time Telemarketing job are between 35 and 40 hours a week and for a Part-Time Telemarketing job it might range anywhere between 25-30 hours per week.

The Direct Marketing Authority Code of Practice recommends that no telemarketing should take place between 9pm and 8am.

Salary Structures Available:

These figures are only a guide - actual rates of pay may vary.

  • The new entrants might start on a salary ranging from Rs.6000 to about Rs.11,000 a month for a Full-Time job and a salary of Rs.2500 to about Rs. 4000 a month for a Part-Time job.

Those involved in sales may get incentives in addition to their salary. Operators who use a special skill (such as a foreign language) may also be paid at a higher rate than the ones who market local products.

Skills and personal qualities required:

Telemarketing Professionals require:

  • Confidence when talking to strangers
  • A clear, fluent telephone voice
  • The ability to understand a wide range of accents
  • The ability to work quickly and under pressure
  • Stamina
  • The ability to key in accurate data while talking on the phone
  • The ability to sound cheerful at all times
  •  The ability to deal efficiently and patiently with all customers.
  • Persuasive skill and the ability to accept rejection without becoming downhearted (for telesales).

Training

In most organizations, the supervisor gives the initial training in telephone skills and the product knowledge, so that the telemarketers are sufficiently confident when they make their first real calls. Once the telemarketers gain further experience, they will be monitored for a while to check and to see if they are fully competent.
