telemarketing laws

The various laws governing the automatic dialing and announcing devices (telemarketing auto dialer equipment) differ from state to state and from country to country. Some of the locales also have additional legislation at the city and at the country levels. It is also the sole responsibility of each user of outbound dialing/telemarketing equipment to familiarize themself with the laws related to their specific application, and adhere to them. There are a large number of laws on the books and each of them varies from the other greatly, and these laws also very frequently contradict one another. The faceless telemarketers are probably some of the most hated people in the Western Countries today. Citizens of these countries where outsourced telemarketing is growing at a rapid pace, the citizens get some 16 billion sales calls each year, which means almost every home gets at least one call a day despite most of the states having enacted laws introducing "do not call" registries. Typically the telemarketing calls interrupt people at the most inopportune times, when, either the people are sitting down to dinner or a parent is reading to his or her child.
But the
anti-telemarketing battle is far from won. The new telemarketing law excepts
political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors and companies with
which the consumer has a recent business relationship, which means there is
nothing to prevent AOLs and AT&Ts from going after their present and past
customers with new deals, upgrades etc.
