Artificial rock, also known as faux rock, is the new favourite of landscape designers, architects and building contractors. Artificial rock could be made from materials like fibreglass, synthetics like rubber, or plaster. The most frequently used materials are polymer modified or fibreglass reinforced concrete. Such a combination of materials results in a mixture that is not only strong but also flexible, and can be moulded easily to produce the shape you want. Often, such stones end up being more durable than natural ones.
Many rocks are also made of coir and sand. Being light weight, they are also more easily transported than natural boulders. Besides, artificial rocks can be coloured with dye or paint to blend well with their surroundings and add to the aesthetic appeal of the place. Other reasons for the popularity of faux rock is that they can be made into any shape you want, and therefore they can be made to fit into a given space. It is also easier to attach plaques to them. In fact, rock making is slowly turning into a creative process and a leisure activity for many people, especially those who are interested in gardening and landscaping.

projects. author Annie Zaidi.
