Lawn ornaments are not as novel as they sound. They have been around for
decades in some form or the other. In fact non-ornamented lawns were considered
to be like bookcases without books. Lawn ornaments adorn the landscape and bring
grandeur, life and vitality to the outdoor atmosphere.
An attractive birdbath in the lawn enhances its beauty and also slakes the
thirst of thirsty birds. The birdbaths come in various designs, styles and
shapes. Choose the right one and you have got a lawn with a winner. In addition
it might just trigger an interest in ornithology.
Grecian urns have an uncanny knack of turning staid people into artists. A
couple of Grecian urns at the ends of the lawn is deemed to be in good taste.
The beauty and the symmetry is enough to turn any one’s head. Classical urns
just cannot but be right.
Water is fascinating be it from a waterfall or a fountain. Fountains with pussy
willows or frogs at the summit lend a whimsical touch and with a few lights
thrown in for effect, you are in for a colorful refreshing spray. Natural
concrete fountains become more and more beautiful as they age and the fact that
they require very little maintenance augurs well for the owner.
A Wishing well decorated with vines enhances the beauty of the lawn. It gives a
rustic look and at the same time establishes a focal point. It adds to the style
of other ornaments and seems to blend with its surroundings. No wonder then that
it always manages to gather a crowd around it.
Tudor style storage sheds cater to minimum storage needs and when attached to a
deck or a fence can be pretty stylish to look at. Gazebos too add to the beauty
of a lawn and come in pretty useful when you want snack outdoors. The nicest
thing that adorns a lawn is an attractive sundial. A work of art by itself, it
is the neighbor’s envy and the owners pride.
Animal and bird statues have always managed to attract people. Ornamental geese,
ducks, blue herons or flamingoes, owls which rotate and rabbits and frogs ready
to jump are a few things that can be used as ornaments on the lawn. Strangely
enough gargoyles are still significant. Made from resin or cast stone, they are
pretty intriguing, creatures. In the olden days they were said to ward off evil
spirits and maybe they still do so even now.
Interestingly Lawn lighthouses made from fiberglass are common. Complete with a
flasher and revolving beacons, they are painted and replicated to resemble real
lighthouses. No one can pass by without looking at it twice. Windmills compete
with lighthouses for a second place. Aero-deck lawn windmills feature
frequently. Rooster Weather vanes or the rocking horse weathervanes blend with
the windmills and lighthouses. The natural elements are personified exquisitely.
Thus we have it all. Columns and pedestals, statues, duck and geese, rabbits and
deer, birdbaths and wishing wells, name it and you have it. Tables and benches
add a finishing touch. Come Christmas and the lawn turn magical. Flags and
crystals which light up when it gets dark, Gazing balls and lanterns turn the
lawn into paradise and no one wants to leave.
There is just no end to decorating the lawn. It can be as imaginative and
creative as you can get but the hardest part is maintaining the ornaments in
case they are made of stone, marble or iron. Do that and your lawn will indeed
be a sight for sore eyes.
