medicine cabinets

A peep down history lane unveils the mysteries of the iron and wooden chests where grandma stored her potions. Herbs, concoctions and vile smelling liquids kept every running insect at bay. With the evolution of man and technology, there came a metamorphosis and medicine cabinets crystallized.

Strange as it may seem, people chose not the kitchen, the living, dining room or the storeroom to install these medicine cabinets, but the bathroom.  Often relegated to the background as just a mere washroom, the bathroom now became another room where the individual allowed his personality to permeate. So what is it with these things? Why is such a hue and cry made about the design and décor of medicine cabinets?

Medicine cabinets reveal that part of man, which he wants hidden, and in some form or other they  have now become an inevitable part of every bathroom. This being the case, one must obviously shower on it the same interest and zeal while creating it. Just as kitchen cabinets house an assortment of things and make the kitchen a more compact, less crowded and  an excellent workplace, so too the medicine cabinet initially designed to hold medicines now houses the strangest assortment of items which just do not fit in elsewhere.

Traditionally, it is built over the sink, but sometimes just across it. Square or rectangular in shape, it can be pushed into a space created in the wall so that it does not jut out.  This recessed unit could be mirrored either on one side or both, depending on your vanity. The division of the cabinet can be made to suit your needs.

Smaller partitions can be made to hold small items like toothbrushes, paste, tongue cleaners and dental floss. The bigger compartments can hold the creams, lotions and perfumes. And since it is after all a medicine cabinet, it needs to contain some medicines at least. You will be amazed at the variety here.  While drugs like Aspirin, paracetamol, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, a few gauze strips, some antiseptic creams, painkillers and perhaps a roll of bandages do find a place, it is overawed by the skin tonics, revitalisers, face scrubs, lotions and creams, face packs and oils, mascara and eyeliners, skin toners and tanners, nutravitamins and shampoos.. The list is just mind boggling and it just goes to show how much of a misnomer the word medicine cabinet really is.

Another thing that has gained importance in the stylizing of the medicine cabinet over the years is the location of the bathroom.  If this happens to be attached to a bedroom, which has antique Victorian or Elizabethan furniture, then the décor of the medicine cabinet is also antique in style. The carving is heavy and elaborate. However, if the bathroom is adjacent to a modern kitchen where steel and chrome reign supreme, then nickel knobs and chrome-plated doors adorn the medicine cabinet.

With the intrusion of electronic gadgets, medicine cabinets became even more functional units where electric razors, hair dryers, hair curlers had their own powered points with optional attachments for lighting. As it became more and more personalized, almost each member of the family had his or her own medicine cabinet and the number of secret compartments, drawers and specially designed shelves gradually increased. With the demand for space in the cabinet growing, huge walk in cabinets in the style of French windows are being constructed. So much of care goes into the design and décor of the medicine cabinet that maybe in the years to come they could virtually end up by being a mini restroom in the bigger washroom.
