modern home furnishings

With the evolution of man, his basic needs also have undergone a change and with the evolution of technology, his basic needs have further evolved. Today “ergonomics” is the deciding factor. Ergonomic very broadly put means that whatever is designed takes into account the requirements of the human body. Herman Miller invented this concept of modern home furnishing. Furniture built that way is safe and healthy and helps you to take care of yourself. It is an expression of the present era. Function, form and beauty synthesize in the simplest of ways producing elegance and unity.
Modern home furnishing encompasses furniture with unusual shapes and not much height. Low chairs and tables are very popular. In fact, bookshelves, dressing tables and even beds and sofas are in stark contrast to the furniture of yester year. The fundamental forms are different.

Modern home furnishing consists of furniture of all kinds of shapes ranging form rectangles and circles to trapeziums and rhombus. Invariably there is a geometric notion assigned to it. Computer chairs are designed so that there is no anatomical fatigue. The nomenclature assigned to such furniture is modular. Coffee tables made from stainless steel and chrome, stools with magazine racks and retracted wheel systems add to the sleekness. Indian homes have utilized spaces very well, and the shape of the furniture and the type of furnishing available in the market have in a sense revolutionized the décor of many homes. The Indian market has adapted itself to the need for modern furnishing and sleek and smart are the watchwords.

There is a marked preference for hard metallic and glass materials over wood. This is not only true of indoor furniture but also of outdoors. It is symbolic of the machine age that we are living in and is a trendsetter for the future. Chromium and stainless steel have become an inevitable part of modern furniture. Like monel metal which happens to be an alloy, sinks, drain boards, and even metal fireplaces are constructed from these metals. Easy to maintain, more durable than wood, these metals seem to have slowly taken the place of wood. In lawns, gardens, and even in porches, wrought iron or metal tubing is preferred. Glass is clean, precise and impersonal. It combines beautifully with metals. Table tops made from glass are all time favorites. They add a sparkle to homes and if it were not for its delicate nature, it could be put to various uses.

In the twenty first-century, the focus is on plainness. Flamboyance in any form is frowned upon. Any external form of decoration is deemed inappropriate. Wherever pattern is used, it appears in the abstract form not heeding conventional designs. The basic factor underlying modern home furnishing is that it must in no way interfere with function. Of course form is never compromised. The aesthetics is always kept in mind. Steely, metallic colors like silver is often a favorite. The slogan is always, clean-direct color. Curtain material and upholstery have good substitutes in cellophane and fabrikoid, which are used in garden furniture. Lacquer fabrics also share the limelight.
Indirect lighting is in vogue and very few fixtures are actually visible. Stainless steel floor lamps with enameled interiors and silvered bulbs are novel features that transform the place drastically. Polypropylene lights are so versatile that they can be used wherever required.

Stylish doorstoppers and stainless steel mirrors which trebles up as a coat hook, an organizer and even a calendar find a place in many homes. LED capsule message clocks, which can be programmed, glow bricks that use solar energy for recharging act as night lamps providing light for almost 8 hours at a stretch have become common features.

The list is endless. The focus here is on simplicity and there is no redundancy. In India, especially in the metros where space is a problem, modular furniture works wonders. Furnishings and accessories are eclectic. From abstract art and primitive sculpture, to geometric designed and patterned rugs, modern home furnishings are here to stay.
