wood paneling

If your walls are adorned with wood paneling, then removing or replacing a section of the wood paneling might become a necessity for you. Whether you end up having to remove the damaged sections of the paneling or whether you decide to go with a different look for your walls, you can rest assured that you could do the work all on your own.

All you need to carry out the required work yourself are a few common tools and of course a couple of hours of your time. Before you actually take off the paneling to start with your work, you need to carefully remove the crown molding and the baseboard of the paneling.

The finish that your paneling already has might be difficult to match in the future, so it if possible it would be better to try and pry it off without damaging the paneling. The next step would be to inspect the wood paneling closely. Do try and remove the brads in the paneling if there are any with a pry bar or pincers.

Once you are certain that all the brads have been removed, and then split the panel from top to bottom by setting a chisel against the panel surface and use the hammer carefully. After one side of the wood paneling is completely split use the wrecking bar to pry it loose from the wall. Some part of the paneling might remain attached to the wall. This remaining paneling can be removed by using the putty knife to loosen the glue that is there between the paneling and the wall. If the paneling does not come off easily, then you can try using a thin pry bar to break the bond. And there might also be some nails that hold back the paneling to the wall, and these should be removed also. To put on a new wood paneling in the place of the one that has been just removed you need to first check the fit of the paneling to the wall and then set it aside.

The next step is to run a string of glue down the wall. This is the place where the wood paneling will be attached to the wall.
