angel statue

Angels - the word is derived from the Greek etymology meaning ‘messenger’. The usual image we have of an angel is a Cute little winged creature playing the harp and spreading the message of love and peace across the world. In fact there are several kinds of angels we believe in such as guardian angels, attendants, messengers and so on. So strong is our belief in these that we have captured these benevolent little spirits into angel statues as masterpieces of art and sculpting. Right from the Renaissance Age till date, artists have been creating Angel statues due to the religious and emotional characteristics attached to them.  Angel statues are is for religious purposes, as garden statues, home décor, in offices, in museums for informative displays etc. In fact in his movie ‘the Christmas Box,’ Richard Evans has added a novel emotional perspective to the angel statue wherein aggrieved parents look upto them as an abode of healing and peace of the mind.  This brings us to further believe that angels actually exist and being intermediaries between Man and God, bring us closer to the Divine spirits.

Angel statues are available in a variety of forms such as porcelain angels, guardian statues, cherub sculptures, plaques and plates, figurines and many more depending upon the usage purpose. Garden angel statues are usually made of poly resins due to their durability. These are available in various sizes ranging from inches to feet and a variety of poses; cherubic angels around Virgin Mary, two angels with one sitting in the other’s lap, some holding a pretty little bird and so on. Marble angels are equally popular, especially those painted in antique white. Bronze, brass, stone are other material from which angel statues are made of or carved from.

As mentioned before, an angel statue depicts a unique theme or message. E.g. an angel donning armour is an emblem of truth and one bearing a sword depicts justice. As angels are basically associated with ‘message carriers’, they are meant to pass across a message. Thus they might be depicting various heavenly virtues like love, peace, protection…each time one sees an angel statue, he is bound by the ancient classics of mythological history and civilization. Some such masterpieces are the ‘Archangel made by Guido Reni, Winged Lovers at the French Louvre museum etc.

By their very nature, angels are looked upon as cherubic, protective and peace –loving. They symbolize goodness and friendship. Thus angel statues are a favorite depiction of protectors against bad omens and evils.
