The ‘bronze’ touch to a statue spells a mystical
aura of mythology and a religious flavour. The effect dates back to the
Chola dynasties that invented Bronze statues of Gods as a physical
emblem for worship. Ever since then, these statues have created a
sacrosanct space in many a garden and homes in the form of the Dance god
Nataraj, or an omnipresent Ganesha for the dual purpose of
worship and ethnic décor. The most popular types of bronze statues are
sourced from South India, Bengal, Thailand, and Bangladesh
etc. But on account of its enchanting qualities, this Oriental art form
has well seeped into the Western markets and taken face of a variety of
animals too. One of the most intriguing questions that comes to one’s mind is ‘why bronze?’ Can’t we replace the finish with copper or another suitable option? The explanation lies in the malleability of bronze as a metal. It can shape itself into the most intricate of designs that highlight the USP of a bronze statue. Thus bronze is the delight of our craftsmen as well as the engraver who can render the exact features and expressions of the statue. What, then, is the secret of the rare art? In South India as well as Bengal, the craftsmen have mastered the Lost Wax method for best results to create some breathtaking pieces. The Lost Wax method is a 4-stage method of bronze casting wherein a wax mold of the statue is created initially, post which a mold is created around the wax piece. This is then cast into a bronze mold and finally the finishing touches are rendered. The entire process is an artistic example of perseverance and exquisite craftsmanship that make the bronze statue a masterpiece in itself.
